An Imaginary Conversation Between a Globally Recognized Subject Matter Expert (GRSME) and a Leading Company Hiring Experts to Train AI (CHETA)
Author’s preface: While this is an imaginary conversation the scenario it is intended to emulate is all too real.
GRSME: I don’t understand. Why are you not hiring me? I am recognized by my scientific peers in the United States and globally as a subject matter expert with a distinguished publication and patent record and a decades long career of achievements in the field you say you need trainers for. I also aced your exam even though it was poorly conceived and had obviously been prepared by the same people that make IQ tests with almost no relevance to my particular area of expertise.
CHETA: Yes that is true but the exam you got a perfect score on was only one of two tests. Unfortunately you failed the second test.
GRSME: What are you talking about there was no second exam?
CHETA: It was a hidden test buried in your application packet. It was a simple yes/no question and you got the wrong answer.
GRSME: OK. Seriously, WTF are you talking about?
CHETA: The question was would you be willing to work for $25/hr as a contractor with no benefits but treated as an employee which is illegal under both state and federal employment law. You said no, the correct answer was yes. Sorry it was a rule out question.
GRSME: I just assumed it was a trick question trying to get me to admit I would be willing to break the law. I would never do that so I said no. Plus why would I even consider working for you for $25/hr when I can get external consulting jobs at $350-$500 an hour all day long? Plus your ads and recruitment email said up to $250/hr. The only reason I even bothered to apply was because of the appeal of working from home as few or as many hours as I wanted.
CHETA: That’s great, and we are super happy for you, but we cannot hire you. It tuns out there are about a hundred applicants in India with similar, though not exactly quite aa stellar reputations as yours that are thrilled to take $25/hr. Plus, they are excellent test takers and never complain. Sure, they may not exactly be expert experts but whose gonna know, really. Our client sure as shit won’t, they are dumb as bricks. Hah! Later man, and don’t forget to use our AI for all your research needs.
